An authentic and traditional riad

The word “riad” comes from the Arabic for ‘garden’. It was initially used to describe a garden with a fountain and a pond and a house. It then became the word used to describe the traditional town house built with all the rooms opening onto a central patio decorated with a fountain and pond and planted with trees and flowers . More recently riad became synonym of guest house because of Europeans falling under the charm of these old houses in the medinas and buying one or several houses, renovating them to manage them as guesthouses or small hotels.

During the renovation of Dar Zinnia we favoured the ‘hand-made’, even with small imperfections, rather than the “made in factory”. We chose local craftsmen from Marrakesh, sometimes from our own neighbourhood,
the Kaskbah. Everything in the riad is handmade, from carved or painted wood furniture to wrought iron 4-poster bed, chairs, balustrade etc.
